Dr Tony Holohan issues message to unvaccinated people of Ireland amid Delta wave fears

Dr Tony Holohan has urged unvaccinated people to keep following public health measures until they receive their jab.

The Chief Medical Officer told people that their opportunity to get vaccinated is coming "very soon".

But he warned that people who remain unprotected are still at risk of contracting the virus amid Delta variant fears.

In an update posted to Twitter Dr Holohan advised people to follow basic health measures to help avoid catching Covid.

He said: "So the basic things like hand washing and wearing a mask and responding to symptoms, avoiding crowds, not meeting up with people indoors, keeping the number of contacts that you have low and being aware at all times of the situation that you're in.

"If it's a risky situation, or a situation that you're not comfortable in the thing to do is walk away.

"Not going out and about and mingling if you have symptoms and arranging a test through your GP or a testing centre."

Dr Holohan added that people waiting to be vaccinated will have their jab soon saying it is "right around the corner."

He added: "And keeping up that high level if compliance with public health advice over the coming weeks is really important because if you're not yet vaccinated, your vaccination is just around the corner.

"We're making great progress through the vaccination program. We think in a six to eight week period we'll have a very substantial number of the whole population vaccinated.

"So your opportunity to be vaccinated is coming very soon- you don't want to lose that opportunity by virtue of picking up this infection.

"So keep up the measures until you get to the point of having had your second dose of your vaccine."

Meanwhile the government is still currently working on sending out Covid-19 Digital Certificates which will allow people who have recovered from Covid-19 or received a vaccine to travel within Europe.

The certs will also be used to facilitate the return of indoor dining.
