Dr Ranj dishes out expert coronavirus advice and lifts lid on killer bug myths

Dr Ranj Singh has dished out his latest advice on the coronavirus pandemic via FaceTime on Heart Breakfast.

The TV personality also debunked continuous myths that are circulating on the killer illness.

The doctor, 40, spoke to radio hosts Jamie Theakston and Lucy Horobin in a detailed Q&A about the crippling pandemic.

Coming straight from a night shift at a London hospital, the doctor answered eager listeners' burning questions on the bug.

Speaking about COVID-19 symptoms in children, he admitted most are "mild", but urgently encouraged parents to seek help for their children if symptoms get worse.

The celebrity doctor revealed many people aren't seeking help when they should be, in fear of taking their child to see a doctor when they don't have the deadly virus.

He said: "Lots of people are staying at home when they really should be seeking help," adding: "Most of the coronavirus symptoms are mild in children."

Dr Ranj continued: "People are worried about coming in because of the risk of mistakenly thinking the illness of their child is coronavirus."

The Strictly star also warned parents to seek advice if their child is "really poorly", as it might not be the deadly bug.

He went on to say: "If it's not getting better then you need to call 111, and if not then come to A&E," adding that the staff are "waiting".

An eager caller, who works in supermarket Iceland, asked the star if wearing washable face masks will protect herself and co-workers while on shift.

The doctor advised that masks "are not helpful", as he responded: "Lots of people, and it's much more common now, are wearing masks.

"The general advice is most of the masks people wear are not helpful."

He said that people "touch their face more", which is "counterproductive".

Another common question that the TV star responded to involved the use of gloves amid the virus.

He confessed wearing gloves is "only useful if they are changed frequently".

The expert admitted that changing gloves regularly can have the same effect as washing your hands, although he recommends it's "much better" to just wash your hands instead.

Jamie told Dr Ranj that reports are suggesting that up to 40% of the public "might not know" they have the virus.

He agreed: "Exactly, and one of symptoms we're finding out is loss of sense of smell and taste, and you may not get any other symptoms at all. There's a massive variety."

The expert doctor has a new podcast on the way, offering kids' coronavirus advice.

Dr Ranj said he will answer questions from kids themselves.
