Dr Hilary Jones gives startling warning as country passes grim coronavirus milestone

Dr Hilary Jones has given a worrying warning after the country passed a grim coronavirus milestone.

On Tuesday, the UK's death toll surpassed 100,000 since the pandemic began

Good Morning Britain hosts Susanna Reid and Piers Morgan discussed the latest figures with Dr Hilary and Piers demanded that there needed to be accountability for what happened.

"There's got to be accountability because the same people who make all of these catastrophic mistakes are still there and are still making catastrophic mistakes," the presenter said.

Dr Hilary replied with a startling admission: "What I was going to say is that this is an emergency still. We have to make sure we don't have another 100,000 deaths - which is quite possible the way we're going forward.

"Perhaps what we should have had was a coalition government at this time like we did during World War II - a coalition government where no one took the blame for making unpopular decisions but were effective in what they said."

Piers furiously said at the start of Wednesday's GMB: "What a grim, horrible milestone that was - and that was just the official number, the one that the government was prepared to admit to.

"The actual number of deaths, and excess deaths, due to coronavirus is significantly higher. So this is just what the government is prepared to hold its hands up to.

"Boris Johnson is sorry! He's really sorry that 100,000 people have died."

Susanna attempted to diffuse the situation, interjecting with: "Well, I don't think we doubt that he's actually sorry. It's absolutely devastating."

Piers' comments come after the Prime Minister said during a Downing Street coronavirus briefing on Tuesday that he was 'deeply sorry' and 'will learn lessons'.

Mr Johnson said: "I'm sorry to have to tell you that today the number of deaths recorded from Covid in the UK has surpassed 100,000.

"It's hard to compute the sorrow contained in that grim statistic: The years of life lost, the family gatherings not attended and for so many relatives the missed chance to even say goodbye."
