DPlus KIA has stirred controversy in the League of Legends community by appointing a polarizing figure as its new coach, a move that has raised eyebrows ahead of the upcoming LCK Summer Split.
If you’ve followed the LCK since the days of SKT T1 and Griffin, Kim “cvMax” Dae-ho should be a familiar name in League coaching circles. He’s known for his intense coaching style and strict discipline, and has built a reputation for nurturing young talent and pushing players to reach their full potential.

CvMax began his journey as a player and substitute for Samsung Galaxy Blue in the LCK, but he retired in 2015. He started his coaching career with Griffin and led the team to an undefeated CK spring season in 2018, earning a promotion to the main league for the Summer Split.
In 2019, Griffin reached new heights as their roster of rookie players dominated both the LCK Spring and Summer regular seasons, finishing first in the standings each time. However, despite their consistent performances, the team repeatedly fell short in the grand finals, losing to SKT T1 on both occasions. CvMax couldn’t take his team over the finishing line despite being widely praised for his aggressive coaching style.
Looking back at the Griffin squad today, the team featured the likes of Sword, Tarzan, Chovy, Viper, and Lehends, who have largely become veterans and are actively competing in the world’s top-tier leagues.
CvMax’s career has not been without controversy. Allegations of verbal and physical abuse during his time with Griffin led to an investigation and temporary suspension. But he returned to coaching with DRX in 2019.
After winning their first World Championship title in 2020 and finishing as runners-up twice at MSI and Worlds in 2021, DPlus KIA have experienced a decline, even with ShowMaker and BeryL at the helm. There have been multiple changes in the coaching staff and players, but the team has yet to find a solution to their concerns. CvMax, with his experience, could be that final piece of the puzzle that the team desperately needs to solve their woes.
While Bae “Bengi” Seong-woong remains the head coach for the squad, DPlus KIA will definitely value cvMax’s services when competing on the international stage.
