Dozens of dangerous electronics being sold on Amazon Marketplace, eBay and more

An investigation by a consumer's website has warned that "dozens" of dangerous electronics are being sold by trusted online sellers.

Which? has said that USB chargers, travel adapters and power banks being sold on Amazon Marketplace, eBay, Wish and AliExpress could cause fires, give electric shocks and could even be potentially deadly.

The website found that more than three-quarters of 35 products by brands that researchers didn't recognise purchased from the above websites failed electrical safety tests.

According to Which? all four marketplaces sold USB chargers that could deliver electric shocks or start fires. USB travel adapters also failed tests by the website because holes were too wide. More than half of the unbranded power banks also has major electric safety failing that could lead to fires.

The company has now called for sellers to take greater responsibility regarding product safety.

Natalie Hitchins, Which? head of home products and services, said: "Online marketplaces that list cheap and unsafe electrical products sold by unknown brands are putting people at risk.

"These products might be cheap but our testing shows they have the potential to cause serious damage or injury, including electric shocks and fires.

"Online marketplaces need to take greater responsibility for the products that are sold on their sites – while the product safety authorities must do much more to identify unsafe products and keep them out of people’s homes."

If you have bought one of the products that could be dangerous, Which? recommends you stop using it immediately and either return the item or claim a refund under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.
