Download Festival noise complaints made to police as acts heard 10 miles away

Police have received a number of calls from local residents concerned about the noise coming from Download Festival. According to reports on social media, the annual rock festival could be heard in Stapleford, at least 10 miles away from the Donington Park venue, as well as in Long Eaton and other suburbs on the edge of Derby.

Fairly strong winds and a potential sound system upgrade may have contributed to the distance the noise travelled, reports Derbyshire Live, and the issue led to a number of calls to Derbyshire Police. In a statement, the force offered advice to people who have raised concerns.

On Thursday evening (June 8), a spokesman said: "We are receiving a number of calls from residents concerned about noise from the Download Festival this evening. Download Festival is an annual music event held at Donington Park near Castle Donington in Leicestershire.

"We’re not able to help with concerns about noise, but North West Leicestershire District Council have provided information around what residents can expect, and what to do if you feel you are experiencing unreasonable noise levels. For details, please visit this link. Residents can also get more information, including details of noise tests, on the Download website."

The organisers of the festival have already had to apologise over the sheer levels of congestion experienced by customers on the surrounding roads and M1 motorway in recent days. The campsites and campervan field for the festival opened at 12noon on Wednesday (June 7), with the entertainment taking place between Thursday, June 8, and Sunday, June 11. Metallica, Bring Me the Horizon and Slipknot are all headlining the event.

This year an extra day of music has been added to the bill to mark the festival's 20th anniversary. But with the likes of Metallica, Alter Bridge and Halestorm among Thursday's acts, the entertainment appeared to have reached audiences further afield, thought to have been because of the weather conditions.

The likes of Bring Me The Horizon, Architects and Pendulum are among the biggest and most well-known acts to perform on the Apex Stage on Friday evening. Download Festival was contacted by Derbyshire Live for comment about the noise.
