Downing Street to give live briefing on coronavirus latest today

A live televised briefing on the latest on coronavirus in England is to be given from Downing Street on Wednesday morning.

The briefing will focus on the latest figures, showing whether the lockdown in England has had an impact on the latest coronavirus infection rates, hospitalisations, admission to intensive care and deaths.

The briefing will be lead by Dr Susan Hopkins, medical adviser with Public Health England.

As well as looking at the overall infection rate there will be break downs on how the coronavirus is spreading among different age groups and in different parts of the country.

Dr Hopkins last addressed the nation on Monday when she spoke alongside Health Secretary Matt Hancock.

At the time she said tier restrictions after lockdown ends in December will probably need to be tougher than they were before lockdown.

She said ministers would have to look at “strengthening” the tier system.

Tier 1 restrictions that covered huge parts of England had “very little effect”, she said, adding that even Tier 2 only worked in some areas.

The briefing will be held from 11am.
