Doug Pederson on Darius Slay giving the Eagles ‘something they’ve never had’

The Philadelphia Eagles have themselves a shutdown cornerback on the roster, a guy finally capable of shadowing the opposing team’s top wideout while taking him out of the ballgame.

For an Eagles team that has been tortured by Amari Cooper and Terry McLaurin among others, the arrival of Darius Slay has smiles on everyone’s faces. During a sitdown with Angelo Cataldi and the WIP94 Morning Team, Pederson couldn’t hold his excitement for Slay, a guy that gives the Birds “something we’ve never had.”

“Something that we haven’t had here, obviously in the first four years, is that corner position you really feel comfortable in maybe matching say a top receiver on an opponent,” Pederson said when asked about Slay. “I know Jim (Schwartz) is excited about that in using Darius in that regard. Darius is comfortable, he’s done that before in his career in Detroit. He’s an exciting player, he’s very energetic, he’s electric, he’s got a lot of energy.”

Jim Schwartz and company have made it clear that they’ll move Slay around, the move that’ll further be helped by the acquisition of Nickell Robey-Coleman. Slay is tied with Malcolm Butler for second behind Stephon Gilmore for the most forced incompletions over the past five seasons.
