Donny van de Beek backed to be 'wonderful' for Liverpool if he completes shock transfer

Liverpool have been told that Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek could be the ideal replacement for Gini Wijnaldum by Ajax legend Sjaak Swark.

The 24-year-old has had a difficult debut season in the Premier League after arriving from Holland last year, starting on just four occasions - two of which came amid hefty rotation in the final weeks of the campaign as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side prepared for the Europa League final.

Questions continue to be asked regarding Van de Beek's suitability at United, though there has been fierce competition in the middle of the park.

With United again in the market for a central midfielder this summer, Van de Beek's future could indeed come under question - and Swark has suggested moving across the north west to Merseyside.

What should happen with Van de Beek this summer? Let us know in the comments below!

"He played really great at Ajax, until he left. He was ready for abroad. But at United they have eight or nine midfielders, and you have to intervene, then that takes time," he told Veronica Inside, as reported by SoccerNews NL.

"You have a midfield with Pogba and Fernandes, he is not going to throw that trainer out because they are worth 150 million euros, on paper.

"That's a choice he has to make himself. He feels himself whether he should leave. I'm not worried about him.

"He would fit right in with other clubs. If I look at Liverpool and Wijnaldum is leaving now, he will be a wonderful replacement. Or Thomas Müller, at Bayern Munich."

No player has moved directly between the two clubs since Phil Chisnall left United for Liverpool in 1964.
