Donny van de Beek accused of "thinking he's a big boy" by joining Man Utd

Struggling Manchester United star Donny van de Beek has been accused of "thinking he's a big boy" by joining the Old Trafford side.

The Dutch international has misfired in his debut season in the Premier League following his summer switch from Ajax.

The midfielder has been frustrated with his lack of playing time as he finds the likes of Paul Pogba, Scott McTominay and Fred above him in the pecking order.

And Netherlands legend Marco van Basten reckons van de Beek thought he was too big for his own boots by prematurely making the move to England.

The former Milan striker believes the 24-year-old's situation is the perfect example that the grass isn't always greener on the other side away from Holland.

Van Basten told Ziggo Sport, as relayed by Soccernews.nl: “It just shows what a great life they have when they play at Ajax.

“They all think very quickly that they are a big boy here and can make it in other countries, but in the Netherlands, there is a nice competition.

“In a team like Ajax you are really helped, especially in the No.10 position. Then you often see that they go abroad and it is a different story.”

Van de Beek has started just two Premier League games all season as the likes of Bruno Fernandes has largely kept him waiting in the wings.

But despite his comments, Van Basten did offer some advice to van de Beek as he tries to reignite his career with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men.

He added: “You have to be able to take care of yourself. If you go to a club in another country, you have to be able to present yourself in that team in a way that the others will think: he is one of us and with him we are going to win."
