Donegall Street fire forces Belfast cafe to close "until further notice"

The owners of a popular cafe in Belfast have announced their closure after a fire in their building on Monday.

Neighbourhood Cafe, on Donegall Street, will be shut until further notice after a fire broke out in the Old Cathedral Building. Over 50 firefighters were tasked to the scene this morning.

In a statement issued through social media, Neighbourhood Cafe said: "With great sadness we will be closed until further notice due to a fire in our building. Thanks for all the messages of support. We’ll be back soon."

Road closures remain in place this afternoon, with a Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue (NIFRS) Spokesperson confirming the task force dispatched to the scene.

"NIFRS have been called to reports of a fire in a building at Old Cathedral Building, Belfast at 05.37 on Monday 3nd October 2022," they added.

"8 Fire Appliances from Belfast, a Command Support Unit from Lisburn, two Aerial Appliances, 52 Fire-fighters and 5 Officers are in attendance. The incident is ongoing."

A PSNI spokesperson said: "Donegal Street in Belfast has been closed while the NIFRS deal with a fire at a building in the area. A number of diversions are in place. Motorists and pedestrians should avoid the area."
