Donegal ace Odhran MacNiallais taking a break from Gaelic Football

Donegal must plan without ace Odhran MacNiallais for the summer after he informed Declan Bonner that he was taking a break from the game.

The Gweedore star also opted out in 2017 and had signalled his intention to take some time away after his club bowed out at the All-Ireland semi-final stage though did play a part in this year’s League campaign.

MacNiallais, 26, has also been trying to come to terms with the tragic death of his close friend Micheál Roarty, one of four men killed in a traffic accident earlier this year.

“No, I’m not going back,” MacNiallais (above) told Highland Radio. “I told Declan last week.

“I just have no real interest in football at the minute to be honest. The last few weeks, even training with the club, I haven’t really enjoyed it.

“I just don’t have the hunger and the desire to give the commitment to Donegal. I explained that to Declan. He was very good about it. He just said, ‘that’s grand, take your time. If you ever need us, we’re there for you.”

Donegal travel to Fermanagh on 26 May in the Ulster Championship.
