Donald Trump 'to sign orders restricting refugee access and immigration from Muslim countries'

Donald Trump will sign executive actions on immigration tomorrow, focussing on refugees and immigrants from certain Muslim countries, aides have said.

The President plans to restrict access to the US for refugees and some immigrants from Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somlia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen, according to Reuters.

Several congressional ides and immigration experts told the news agency Mr Trump would sign the orders at the US department of Homeland Security.

During the election campaign, the billionaire called for a ban on all Muslims from entering the US following an extremist mass shooting in San Bernardino.

He later appeared to backtrack on this controversial hard-line, anti-Muslim stance, with the pledge disappearing from his website by election day.

“When I am elected, I will suspend immigration from areas of the world when there is a proven history of terrorism against the United States, Europe or our allies, until we understand how to end these threats,” Mr Trump said in a June 2016 speech.

Mr Trump's restrictions on refugees are likely to include a multi-month ban on admissions from all countries until the Government can increase the intensity of the vetting process.

To block entry from the designated countries, the President is likely to instruct the US State Department to stop issuing visas to people from those nations, according to sources familiar with the visa process.

He could also instruct US Customs and Border Protection to stop any current visa holders from those countries from entering the United States.

White House spokesman Sean Spicer said on Tuesday that the State and Homeland Security departments would work on the vetting process once Mr Trump's Secretary of State nominee, Rex Tillerson, is installed.

Other measures may include directing all agencies to finish work on a biometric identification system for non-citizens entering and exiting the United States and a crackdown on immigrants fraudulently receiving government benefits, according to the congressional aides and immigration experts.

To restrict illegal immigration, Trump has promised to build a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border and to deport illegal migrants living inside the United States. None of the orders to be signed Wednesday are expected to focus on those issues.
