Donald Trump is threatening to extend his federal takeover of Washington D.C. to other major U.S. cities including New York and Chicago in what feels like a play straight out of the tyrannical dictator’s handbook.
This week, Trump made an unprecedented move when he took direct control of the police department in Washington D.C. According to him the city was swamped in crime and required federal intervention to put a stop to it, however, reports indicate that violent crime hit a 30-year low last year and continues to drop. 800 National Guard troops were also deployed to the city as part of Trump’s tougher approach to crime.

BREAKING: Trump now says he’s considering using the same federal takeover he just imposed on Washington, D.C., to seize control of New York, Chicago, and “other cities.”
Translation: this isn’t a one-off, it’s a blueprint for putting blue cities under direct White House rule. pic.twitter.com/OB1mdd23sv
But he’s not quite finished as the U.S. president has also talked about using a similar tactic in other cities across the country that he personally believes are suffering from high crimes. And what a surprise, they’re all cities in blue states.
Trump and his grand federal takeover plans
Speaking to reporters on Monday the president threatened to target cities such as New York and Chicago. He then launched into an immature rant about Illinois Governor JB Pritzker where Trump even mocked his weight, telling reporters, “now I understand he wants to be president, but I noticed he lost a little weight so maybe he has a chance you know.”
Pritzker gave a short response to Trump’s dig saying, “I reject criticism, and don’t really want to respond to criticism from Donald Trump, who inherited his money and then went bankrupt six times and then defrauded his business partners.” Although it seems he couldn’t resist throwing in a personal dig of his own adding, “by the way, he cheats at golf too,” something which the president was caught on camera doing during his recent trip to Scotland.
While Trump didn’t mention any other cities by name, it’s very possible that, like L.A., D.C., New York, and Chicago, the cities he has in mind for federal takeover are all Democrat strongholds with governors and mayors he personally doesn’t like. The trouble with Trump is he isn’t exactly subtle, and yet people still try to defend his actions. As a matter of fact, some studies have shown that violent crime rates are higher in red states than in blue states, yet you don’t see Trump deploying the national guard to Atlanta.
The president’s false statistics have duped many
Unfortunately it seems as though many of Trump’s supporters bought his lies, hook, line, and sinker. On X some defended the choice to take over D.C., writing, “The guy is trying to make these places pleasant and livable. No one feels safe with drugs and crime.” That may be a fair argument if Trump weren’t lying through his teeth about the crime rates in these cities.
It seems the federal takeover in D.C. may have been a trial run to see how much Trump could get away with, and it turns out he can get away with quite a lot it seems.
