Donald Trump Jr has implied his father asked then-FBI Director James Comey to cut former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn "some slack".
Mr Trump Jr retweeted a post arguing it was not an obstruction of justice for Donald Trump to ask Mr Comey to let go of the investigation because Mr Flynn is a "good man".
"News Flash, Donald Trump hoping James Comey cuts Michael Flynn some slack because he is a 'good man' is not close to #Obstruction," attorney Geraldo Rivera tweeted.
Mr Trump Jr captioned the tweet with one word: "Truth."
The revelations came to light after the New York Times reported Mr Trump asked Mr Comey to end the investigation into Mr Flynn, citing a memo written by Mr Comey himself.
"I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go," the President said to Mr Comey during that meeting, according to the memo.
"He is a good guy. I hope you can let this go."
But Mr Trump Jr later backtracked on the interpretation he had given any implication the contents of Mr Comey's memo are true.
Asked by NPR's Demenico Montanaro if his tweet meant he was confirming Mr Rivera's description of his father's actions, Mr Trump Jr said: Give me a break.
"Me agreeing with someone's interpretation of a theory does nothing of the sort. You're trying way to hard."
The White House had denied the memo's description of the meeting was accurate.
"While the president has repeatedly expressed his view that General Flynn is a decent man who served and protected our country, the president has never asked Mr. Comey or anyone else to end any investigation, including any investigation involving General Flynn,” the White House said.
“The president has the utmost respect for our law enforcement agencies, and all investigations. This is not a truthful or accurate portrayal of the conversation between the president and Mr. Comey.”
