Donald Trump has labelled Alec Baldwin’s Saturday Night Live impression of him “mean-spirited”
After being awarded the title of Time magazine’s person of the year on Wednesday, Mr Trump spoke to NBC’s Today about his Twitter habits since being elected President of the United States.
The businessman is known for his colourful tweets and, quite often, the rows they trigger. He did not slow down with his tweeting rampage throughout the election campaign and some thought that if he were elected president he would be more restrained on the keyboard.
However, despite Mr Trump’s claims he has been “very restrained” on Twitter since the election, Today’s Matt Lauer pointed out he has managed to criticise the cast of the musical Hamilton, Boeing, the New York Times, CNN and finally Saturday Night Live and Baldwin over their impersonation of him since 8 November.
“I hosted SNL when it was a good show but it’s not a good show anymore,” the President-elect said. “Nothing to do with me, there’s nothing funny about it, the skits are terrible.
“I like Alec but his imitation of me is mean-spirited and not very good. I do like him, I like him as an actor but I don’t think his imitation of me gets me at all and it’s meant to be very mean-spirited which is very biased and I don’t like it so I can tweet that out.”
After calling it a “terrible show” a further time, Mr Trump suggested the long-running comedy skit show would come to an end soon.
Lauer suggested Mr Trump would be better off just not watching the show, something that might be worth considering given that Baldwin said on Sunday he would stop the impression only on one condition.
“Release your tax returns and I’ll stop. Ha," Baldwin said after Mr Trump hit out at the show for being “sad”.
