Donald Trump Accused Of Mocking Catholics After Posting An AI-Generated Pope Pic Of Himself

In unsurprising news from across the globe, US President Donald Trump has pissed off a bunch of folks (for the billionth time) after posting an AI generated image that depicts himself as the Pope.

The image, which sparked outrage from Catholics worldwide, was shared days after Trump was accused of mocking the religion, telling reporters that he’d “like to be the Pope”, as billions of believers mourn the death of Pope Francis.

In the AI-generated image, Trump is seen wearing a white cassock and a pointed mitre — a type of headgear worn by a bishop. He is also seated in what seems to be a gold throne, with a gold cross around his neck and his finger pointed up.

“Not ok. Offensive to me as a Catholic,” one punter wrote.

“Voted for Trump, but as a catholic, I hate this deeply. The role of the papacy is super important for Catholics more than any presidency,” one Trumpie commented.

“In poor taste. This goes beyond. I voted for you and I still support you, but this is irreprehensible and disgusting. There’s a mockery to [sic] my faith. You are president, you’re not a king and you’re not a Pope,” wrote a third.

The New York State Catholic Conference took to X (formerly Twitter), stating, “There is nothing clever or funny about this image”.

“We just buried our beloved Pope Francis and the cardinals are about to enter a solemn conclave to elect a new successor of St Peter. Do not mock us,” it wrote.

Left-leaning former Italian prime minister Matteo Renzi also slammed the president on X.

“This is an image that offends believers, insults institutions and shows that the leader of the global right enjoys being a clown,” Renzi wrote in his scathing post.

“In the meantime, the American economy risks recession and the dollar loses value. The sovereignists cause damage, everywhere.”

At the time of writing, Trump has not responded to the outrage — and honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if he never does.

Per ABC News, Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni did not comment on Trump’s post during a meeting with journalists, where they discussed the process of electing a new pope.

On April 21, Pope Francis died after suffering from a stroke and irreversible heart failure.

The conclave to choose a new pope will begin May 7.
