The mayor of Dungog is asking residents not to vote for him at the upcoming council election as a vote for him in the ward will be a wasted ballot.
In a unique situation, Cr John Connors is the only person running for mayor meaning he will be elected unopposed.
But his name still appears on the ballot for A Ward, meaning any votes for him in this category will not count.
Cr Connors said he asked for his name to be removed but the NSW Electoral Commission said that wasn't an option as the situation was unprecedented.
"I am proud to continue to represent the people of Dungog Shire during the next council term, but want to make sure that their vote counts," Cr Connors said.
"As a result, I am urging residents in A Ward to select another candidate, as a mark against my name means your vote will be wasted."
Cr Connors has held the position of mayor since February last year, following the resignation of Tracy Norman from the role.
Residents had previously not voted directly for the shire's mayor. The candidate was elected by the other councillors at a council meeting.
The council election will be held on December 4 and pre-poll opens on November 22.
