Don’t overreact to early reports regarding Dolphins’ QB competition

It has been nearly two months since the Miami Dolphins first opened their doors to players for the 2019 offseason and in the time that has passed since, fans have already seen notable swings and shifts in expectations around the team. First, the Dolphins were expected to be dreadful. Now? The team isn’t expected to be good — but they aren’t necessary looking to bomb their 2019 campaign.

With the start of the 2019 regular season still three months away, expect much to change with these Dolphins yet again. And again. Which is why it’s important for fans to make sure they’re not overreacting to any rumors, murmurs or headlines around the team — especially this early.

The report late last week came out that veteran quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick has been out-performing Josh Rosen during the team’s organized team activity (OTA) sessions. Time to hit the panic button of Miami’s acquisition at quarterback?

No, not at all. The fact of the matter is the valuable reps of this quarterback competition are still months in the future. The Dolphins are installing their offense — teaching new concepts and coaching up their talent. Some of the most heralded training camp and OTA performers of years past have gone on to not even make the final 53-man roster. And considering Fitzpatrick’s exposure to a plethora of offenses around the league, it’s logical that Fitzpatrick’s internal clock will move a little faster than a second-year quarterback who has had the playbook for only a month.
