Top Boy star Ashley Walters says he “encourages all the men in his life” to be open and talk about how they feel, saying too often men “hold it all in”.

The actor, rapper and director told the latest edition of Hunger Magazine: “It’s difficult for men, especially men like myself who have grown up in the place I’ve grown up in.

“You’re taught not to express how you feel and hold it all in and be strong. That can be the worst thing. It’s something I try to encourage all the men in my life to do — to be a bit more willing to talk.”

Walters, who shot to fame in music group So Solid Crew, has spoken about growing up with an absent father in Peckham. He tells Hunger: “My lack of relationship with my father before he passed away, my relationship with my sons — it’s shaped the person that I am.”
