DAVIE, Fla. _ The Miami Dolphins may have acquired their quarterback of the future.
The Dolphins traded for Arizona Cardinals quarterback Josh Rosen during the second round of the 2019 NFL draft Friday night.
The Dolphins traded the No. 62 pick in the second round to the Cardinals for Rosen, the former UCLA standout and No. 10 overall pick in the 2018 draft.
The Cardinals were poised to move Rosen after drafting Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray with the first pick in the 2019 draft Thursday night.
The Dolphins, in need of a starting quarterback, were a willing trade partner.
Earlier, the Dolphins traded their No. 48 pick in the second round and No. 116 pick in the fourth to the New Orleans Saints for two second-round picks, one of which is in 2020, and a sixth-round pick this year.
The Dolphins own the No. 62 pick (30th in the second round) and acquired No. 202 in the sixth.
The new 2020 second-round pick becomes Miami's 13th selection next year.
The Dolphins chose to trade back in the second round, while still remaining in trade talks for Arizona Cardinals quarterback Josh Rosen.
The Dolphins were in negotiations with the Cardinals throughout the day about a possible trade for Rosen, with Arizona seeking a second-round pick for the former UCLA standout and No. 10 overall pick a year ago.
As of now, the Dolphins chose to acquire two more picks in exchange of their second-round pick.
The Dolphins began the draft selecting Clemson defensive tackle Christian Wilkins with the No. 13 pick in the first round on Thursday.
A successful Dolphins draft in 2019 would see Miami address its dire needs for a run-stopping defensive tackle like Wilkins, an elite pass rusher, a new starting right tackle, another interior offensive lineman, and a new franchise quarterback.
The Dolphins also hope to address other areas of significant concern like finding a potential starting cornerback, a receiver who can develop into a No. 1 option, a punishing, downhill running back, and another defensive back to square away the secondary.
But, Miami expects to make a splash in the 2020 draft.
The Dolphins could potentially have a first-round pick, and two picks in each of the remaining six rounds next year.
Here's how Miami acquired their extra 2020 picks:
_ Second-round pick from New Orleans.
_ Third-round pick is compensatory from right tackle Ja'Wuan James' free-agent departure to the Denver Broncos.
_ Fourth-round pick from their trade of former quarterback Ryan Tannehill to the Tennessee Titans.
_ A projected fifth-round pick as compensatory for longtime defensive end Cameron Wake, who signed with the Titans as a free agent.
_ Sixth-round pick from Miami's trade of defensive end Robert Quinn to the Dallas Cowboys.
_ A seventh-round pick from their 2018 trade of defensive back Jordan Lucas to the Kansas City Chiefs.
