Dolphins free agent preview: What’s next for QB Teddy Bridgewater

The Miami Dolphins have been incredibly busy before the start of the new league year, as they’ve made moves left and right.

General manager Chris Grier has kept his team in the news by restructuring big contracts and making a big trade, acquiring cornerback Jalen Ramsey. However, they’re also busy with the legal tampering period beginning on Monday.

Miami has a number of players who are set to hit free agency, including quarterback Teddy Bridgewater.

Bridgewater, 30, signed a one-year, $6.5 million last offseason to backup Tua Tagovailoa after single seasons in Denver and Carolina. He appeared in five games for the Dolphins, but he dealt with his own injury issues, leaving a game against the New York Jets after just one play and sustaining a broken finger against the New England Patriots later in the season.

The former first-round pick completed 62% of his attempts for 683 yards with four touchdowns and four interceptions.

Miami probably was expecting more from Bridgewater, as he didn’t exactly perform well when he was out there healthy with elite weapons like Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. Seventh-round pick Skylar Thompson, while looking like a rookie, didn’t look much worse than Bridgewater, at points.

If the Louisville product is looking for another contract that’s probably not coming from the Dolphins. Thompson is still under contract and will likely stick around for 2023 after getting some experience as a first-year player. However, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Miami dip back into the free agent market to find a veteran that fits the system a bit better.

With his resume, Bridgewater will find a job somewhere this offseason, it just won’t be one that allows him to suit up in aqua and orange.
