Dolphins coach Gase rejects lack of chemistry as reason for sluggish offense

DAVIE, Fla. _ Miami Dolphins coach Adam Gase shot down chemistry issues as the reason his offense has struggled with just two touchdowns and no field-goal attempts in the past two weeks.

Quarterback Jay Cutler, signed out of a three-month retirement, is only two months in as the team's starter.

Gase said that's not a legitimate reason for the sluggish performance.

"The chemistry part, when you kind of start late like we did, I can see it taking some time," Gase said Wednesday. "But we've had enough time. We've had enough time and we need to be better at executing what we're doing and making sure that we have more guys doing their jobs than what we've had, and that's how we can get things corrected on offense.

"At this point, the excuses are running out. There are no more excuses. It's either get the job done or we'll find somebody that can."

Gase said he wasn't bothered by Cutler's demeanor, which could be described as disinterested, during the Wildcat play last Sunday against New Orleans. As the snap went to running back Jay Ajayi, Cutler lined up as a wide receiver and stood, hands on hips, at the line of scrimmage.

Gase said there was a good reason.

"As soon as he steps forward they can knock the ... I won't say it," Gase said before continuing. "They can hit him. If he steps back or doesn't move, now you're looking at different kinds of penalties."

Gase continued to say those who insist Cutler should be actively involved in the play might think that way "until you go through it where a quarterback steps up on the ball and starts working downfield and then you watch one of them get blasted. ... I've got a little experience so I kind of know what I'm doing."

Asked whether he cared about Cutler's posture, Gase said no and added, "You guys worry about a lot more things than I do."

Cutler took it all in stride. He said he was "zero" of a target in the Wildcat, adding about the New Orleans defense "I don't think they knew that I was out there."

Cutler said he's been informed he "created quite a buzz" with his body language but he said he was simply following instructions, saying, "that's what they told me to do _ sit there don't get hit, don't touch anybody, don't move. I feel like I executed that one."
