Dolphins cited at potential favorites to land DE Trey Flowers

We can’t quite call winter over until the Miami Dolphins are being tied to every big name on the free agency market. With that said, congratulations everyone, we’ve officially made it to spring!

Tony Pauline of Draftanalyst.com has reported that the Dolphins are considered the front-runners to sign Patriots free agent DE Trey Flowers. Pauline is present in Indianapolis for this week’s NFL Scouting Combine.

This would be something of a surprise, considering Miami’s hopes of flushing out cap space and readying themselves for the future. But that doesn’t make this rumor-mill fodder, either.

Flowers has enough going for him that this report may have some legitimate legs. Flowers, who is 25-years old, plays a primary position of need for this Dolphins team. His youth adds some added value to a potential signing. And most importantly, the staff knows Flowers quite well from coach Flores’ stint with the New England Patriots.

Flowers has been a big part of the Patriots’ defense the last three seasons, logging 21.0 sacks and 59 quarterback hits over that span.

Financially, Miami would be nearly guaranteeing letting Cameron Wake walk with the pursuit and subsequent signing of Flowers. Wake’s most recent contract paid him over $8M per season. That kind of money won’t allow you to land Flowers, but it could be allotted as a large portion of his annual salary.

NFL free agency opens on March 13th at 4 PM.
