A photo of a dog standing guard over his dead friend’s body has tugged on the hearts of internet users.
The Great Pyreness can be seen standing patiently at the side of the road in Dallas, Texas while the lifeless body of the fellow dog lies beside him.
According to NBC, animal rescue volunteers rushed to find the dog after the photo was circulated on social media.
Julie Fennell told the broadcaster: “He was just kind of sitting guard, like a statue, just sitting there watching over his friends body.”
It is likely that the deceased dog was killed by a car travelling on the road. It is believed the Great Pyrenees then dragged his companion onto the grass at the side of the road.
Ms Fennell said: “He’s obviously being loyal to a friend who passed away and he’s mourning.”
“He’s made a friend. Whether it was his companion in his yard at home or whether they met up as strays, but something made him stay by her side.”
It is not clear whether the dog has an owner or is a stray.
Dallas Animal Services are now attempting to trace an owner and are looking after the dog, who had no collar or microchip.
If he is not claimed he will be taken to a rescue centre dedicated to caring for Great Pyrenees’ according to Ms Fennell.
