Dog owners warned after substance which could be fatal for pets washes up on Welsh beaches

Dog owners in west Wales have been warned after a substance which could be potentially fatal for pets washed up on a number of beaches.

A yellow or white waxy substance, believed to be palm oil, has been reported at different locations along the Pembrokeshire coastline.

It has been spotted at Manorbier, Tenby and Amroth.

Palm oil is not harmful to humans but it can be very harmful to pets, and Pembrokeshire Council is warning that it may even be fatal, especially if eaten by dogs.

The coastline is being monitored in case more palm oil washes up, but the council said there is no evidence of the substance on any other beaches in the area.

A spokesman for Pembrokeshire Council said: “Dog owners have been warned to keep their pets on leads on the south Pembrokeshire coastline after a substance believed to be palm oil was washed up.

“Palm oil is not harmful to humans but can be fatal for pets - particularly dogs - if ingested.

“We were informed about the substance on Thursday (November 19) and the coastline is being monitored. Dog walkers and beach users are advised to keep away from the substance.”

The council added that volunteers have been at the affected beaches and removed materials for them to be disposed of safely.
