Dog 'looked like it was going to die' after picking up vape liquid bottle during walk

A nine-month-old puppy was left looking like it was "going to die" after it picking up a vape-style bottle during a walk this week.

The terrifying incident happened on Monday, January 25, close to the Britannia Inn pub on Riverside Drive near Otterspool.

Smokey, a nine-month-old Bedlington Terrier, was rushed to the vets by her panicked owners after falling ill during a walk along Otterspool prom.

The terrier had picked up what its owner described as an eye-drop style vape liquid bottle, before spitting it out.

Within a few minutes he became wobbly and then collapsed.

Smokey's owners rushed him to The Liverpool Vets in Liverpool city centre where he was placed in intensive care after having seizures and falling into a coma.

Practice vet, Dr Danielle Greenberg said: "The lady was really really crying and the dog looked like it was going to die, it was completely unresponsive."

Dr Greenberg added: "We do work with dogs who belong to homeless people. Sadly, I have seen quite a few people do spice and it was almost exactly the same - he was just immobile and falling over.

"I did think it may have originally had methadone in it but we gave him the reversal for it and it didn't really have any effect."

Dr Greenberg said the substance in the bottle must have been extremely potent as the dog had only momentarily picked it up before spitting it out.

Smokey was taken to Liverpool University veterinary practice overnight to be monitored as he was still in a coma.

His owners, who don't wish to be named, went back to the prom to look for the white bottle but the bin they had placed it in had been emptied.

After sourcing medication from another veterinary practice to counter the effects of his poisoning, Smokey delighted his relieved owners when he woke up from his coma the next day.

After posting a photo on their Facebook page of Smokey leaving the vets, a spokesperson for the practice said: " What a difference a day makes. Complete joy to see Smokey this morning almost back to normal."

Dr Greenberg warned dog owners to be vigilant of discarded vape liquid bottles when walking their pets, adding: "I would say to people if they see something and they're walking a dog maybe pick it up in a poo bag because I would be worried about people getting a small amount even if it was on your skin."
