Doctor issues health warning over TikTok trend of cooking chicken in cough medicine

Doctors have issued a health warning after a TikTok video has gone viral.

The experts warn that copying the video could leave people seriously ill.

The video was posted on TikTok that showed people cooking chicken in cough medicine as a way of beating colds and flus.

As reported by the Daily Star, Some believe the dish, known as "NyQuil chicken" - named after a brand of syrup - can beat the regular ailments which come in the winter and said they were going to give it a go

NyQuil is a medicine that can help you sleep when you have a cough or cold and should be taken as instructed on the box.

Aaron Hartman, physician and assistant clinical professor of family medicine at Virginia Commonwealth University, has spoken out about the danger of the trend and issued a warning to those tempted to try it.

"When you cook cough medicine like NyQuil, you boil off the water and alcohol in it, leaving the chicken saturated with a super concentrated amount of drugs in the meat," he told MIC.com.

"If you ate one of those cutlets completely cooked, it’d be as if you’re actually consuming a quarter to half a bottle of NyQuil."

He added that this cooking method could likely lead to food poisoning, which will likely lead to sickness and diarrhoea.

One of the videos getting attention on TikTok has been uploaded by a man called Rob.

It shows him place two chicken breasts in a pan then frying them at a low temperature.

He then pours in "four thirds" of the greenish blue syrup over the chicken and lets it boil for 30 minutes and then flips the chicken to get both sides "seasoned".

He says: "Sometimes the steam really makes you sleepy."

Since the video went viral, many said they'd be trying the "sleepy chicken" dish.

But others questioned it with one saying "This meal will definitely 'put you to sleep'."
