Doctor Hilary Jones issues stark warning on sharp rise in COVID-19 hospitalisations in UK

Doctor Hilary Jones has given a stark warning on a sharp rise in coronavirus hospitalisations in UK after a big increase in infections over the channel in France.

Good Morning Britain's resident health expert was back on the show on Tuesday, as presenters Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid made their big return.

But he had some concerning news about the number of people set to battle COVID-19 in hospital, revealing that throughout the pandemic, the UK trend has mirrored that of France.

And after a rapid rise of infections and hospitalisations over there, Dr Hilary said the UK could see a similar pattern in a matter of weeks.

Monday's figures revealed 1,406 new coronavirus cases had been recorded over here, with 335,873 confirmed cases since the outbreak began and over 41,000 deaths.

Warning that there was no evidence to suggest the virus had 'weakened' he explained: "There is a time lag between the number of cases rising and the serious infections that requite hospitalisation," said Hilary.

"So we are now seeing in France something like 5,100 a day, which compares to something like 272, two weeks after their lockdown finished, so a massive increase in certain parts of France.

"So that's a concern, four times more than what we have here at the moment, but we have always been behind that curve if we compare ourselves to Spain and to France, so our numbers are rising as well, and certainly there is no room for complacency."

"We will see hospitalisations rise as case numbers rise, so we have to be really wary of what's going on in France."

Hitting home that there was no time for complacency, Dr Hilary also raised concerns about how some people in the UK continue to flout Government guidelines, adding: "Most people are adhering to the guidelines and being sensible, but a huge number of people are not... We are seeing raves, we are seeing people on airplanes not wearing masks.

"We are seeing people not even believe the virus exists, and it's of great concern.

"We know only a small percentage of the population have been exposed to the virus already, so there is a huge reservoir of people who are very vulnerable."
