DIY energy-saving hack that could save households £800 a year on bills

We're all feeling the cold at the moment, but due to the rising cost of energy bills, you might be reluctant to have the heating on for too long.

But homeowners can save money and keep warm by carrying out some cost-effective DIY jobs to improve their home's energy efficiency during the colder weather.

According to interiors experts, doing one procedure to your windows can save you 60% on your gas bill - which works out to around £800 per year.

Secondary glazing is a great way to keep your home warmer throughout winter, and you can even do the job yourself rather than hiring professionals.

That's according to specialists at Cut Plastic Sheeting, who have worked out the cost of installing the glazing and how much you'll save on energy by doing so.

Secondary glazing is a way of improving the energy efficiency of a building by adding an extra layer of glazing to existing windows. The secondary glazing is typically installed on the inside of the primary window and is designed to provide an additional barrier against heat loss and noise pollution.

The added layer of glazing also helps to improve the thermal insulation of the building and can reduce the number of drafts and cold spots in a room.

Additionally, it can be an affordable solution for renters who aren’t allowed to make changes to their windows but still want to improve the energy efficiency of their homes.

It would cost between £151.27 to £304.50 depending on the thickness of the windows to install your own secondary glazing throughout the average UK home.

At the moment, the average yearly energy bill in the UK stands at £1343.58 - taking into account standing charge, unit rate, and typical gas use.

And research by Cut Plastic Sheeting found that by installing your own secondary glazing, you could save up to £806.14 per year on your gas bill. This works out to approximately £67 per month per average UK household.

One homeowner even found that they had already begun saving 40% on their monthly bills by installing secondary glazing in their home last year.

The main benefits of secondary glazing include heat insulation, noise insulation, and cost savings. It’s an affordable alternative to double glazing, without the cost, but with similar results.
