Distractions like the 'amateurish' Cardiff Blues rent saga risk undermining Wales' World Cup bid, says Shane Williams

Shane Williams is demanding Welsh rugby sorts out its off-field problems before the national team embarks on the quest to win the World Cup in Japan this autumn.

Back in March WRU chief executive Martyn Phillips apologised personally to the Wales squad in the dressing room after their victory against Scotland following the Scarlets-Ospreys merger shambles.

The thorny proposal, which has now been ditched, resulted in civil war breaking out, with players from the two entities told it was happening just days before the game at Murrayfield.

Despite the regional uncertainty over Project Reset, Wales went on to win a third Six Nations Grand Slam in the Warren Gatland era.

And the latest turmoil now engulfing regional rugby is at the Cardiff Blues with news last week they face the possibility of a winding up petition over unpaid rent for use of their Arms Park home.

The statutory demand for the money has been made by ground landlord Cardiff Athletic Club (CAC) with the figure understood to have risen to £140,000.

And Wales' record try-scorer Shane, believes if off-field problems hampers Gatland's bid for World Cup glory later this year "then the powers that be should be ashamed."

In his column for the Rugby Paper, the Welsh wing wizard, wrote: "Politics, mergers and now unpaid bills. I can't tell you how frustrated I am about the continuing off-the-field nonsense we have to deal with in Welsh rugby.

"I'm utterly sick of it.

"The latest last week was that the Cardiff Blues have unpaid bills to settle on their rent of Cardiff Arms Park and it's a pretty obvious statement to make that it's far from an ideal situation.

"We all know professional rugby is not awash with cash and each of our four regions - plus the Welsh Rugby Union - have their financial challenges to deal with.

"I accept that, but to not have paid rent on your own stadium?

"That seems a little bit amateurish to me. I do wonder how it's got to that stage.

"For any business it's a basic to pay your bills and I'm sure Cardiff Athletic Club - who own the Arms Park - would have thought along and hard about making a summons for the rent.

"I'm sure the situation will get sorted eventually, but why do we have to let it get this far.

"What (the Blues) could do without is these sorts of headlines and distractions and the same goes for Welsh rugby as a whole."

And looking at the wider implications for Japan, he added: "We're going into a huge 12 months and the World Cup warm-up games, the tournament itself, and the new season will all be upon us before we know it.

"We need to get all the boardroom stuff sorted before the rugby starts because if politics ruins Wales' World Cup bid, then the powers that be should be ashamed."
