‘Disgusting’ drunk who sexually assaulted teenage girl, 17, and woman on a bus is jailed

This is the moment a “disgusting” drunk who sexually assaulted a teenage girl and a woman on a bus is arrested before he spits in an officer’s face.

Graeme Hicks, 33, also exposed himself and launched kicks and punches at another passenger.

Essex Police received reports of an intoxicated man abusing members of the public on a double-decker in Braintree on December 27 last year.

Hicks indecently assaulted a 17-year-old girl and a woman, before urinating on the top deck.

Officers arrived within minutes and detained Hicks, who responded by spitting at them and resisting arrest.

At Chelmsford Crown Court Hicks, of Old Chapel Drive, Stanway, was jailed having admitted two counts of sexual assault, exposure, actual bodily harm, criminal damage.

The court heard the offences had a “profound” effect on female victims who are now fearful of using buses.

Hicks was further sentenced for supplying cocaine and cannabis and possessing an air pistol following a separate raid on his home in May 2023.

In total, he received five years and seven months for 10 charges.

Detective Constable Katie George, of Braintree CID, said: “Hicks is a prolific offender and Essex is a safer place with him off our streets.

“He is rightly facing a significant prison sentence.

“Intoxicated or not, his actions towards strangers – one of whom was a lone teenage girl – were deplorable and sexually motivated.

“This case also illustrates the unacceptable behaviour often faced by our officers who are simply going about their work trying to keep the public safe.

“To spit at, kick and assault officers, who are engaging in a polite and professional manner, is sadly not an uncommon offence.

“Officers do not expect and do not deserve to go to work to face such disgusting attacks.”
