Disgust as Storm Corrie topples fences at water investigation hit Ayr cemetery

A graveyard where a probe into ‘water ingress’ had taken place has been battered by metal fencing during Storm Corrie.

The fencing which was due to be removed today was left “open to the elements” as strong wind smashed into the burial grounds over the weekend.

Mourners at Ayr Cemetery were left distressed when they visited the graves on Sunday with the heras-style 8ft metal fencing landing on top of memorials after being launched into the air by strong gusts.

Distressing images have shown graves after they were toppled on with personal items crushed after the fences crumbled.

But council chiefs have denied that any damage has been caused to graves.

Relatives have been left sickened by the damage caused to their loved ones final resting place.

One grieving relative told Ayrshire Live: “It is honestly one thing after another, it is just horrific.

“They knew there was a storm on its way and the fencing surrounding the graves was clearly not secure enough. I am absolutely distraught.

“It is starting to seem like they just don’t care, they haven’t been careful at all.”

Another relative said: “We are absolutely raging, this should never have happened.

"To go down there on Sunday and see graves toppled on is just disgusting."

It is understood council teams were called out yesterday to assess the damage and remove the remainder of the fencing.

It comes just days after bosses revealed that graves inspected had been found to have water leaking into them.

Devastated families were told the news they feared with council teams working to rid chambers of water.

An investigation into the 'water ingress' at the inspected graves is still ongoing.

A spokesperson for South Ayrshire Council said: "Some panels surrounding Ayr Cemetery extension were blown over due to the high winds at the weekend. We have inspected the site and no damage has been caused."
