Disappointing to lose after scoring 220: West Indies skipper Rovman Powell

NEW DELHI: West Indies captain Rovman Powell expressed disappointment after his team's seven-wicket loss to England in the third T20I match of the five-game series at the National Cricket Stadium in Grenada.

Despite posting an impressive total of 220 in the first innings, the West Indies were unable to defend their score against a dominant England side.

In the post-match presentation, Powell praised his team's commendable batting performance, singling out wicketkeeper-batter Nicholas Pooran, who scored an outstanding 82 from 45 balls.

Powell acknowledged that their bowling attack was inconsistent in the third T20I and emphasized the need for better plans in upcoming matches.

"It is obviously disappointing to lose after scoring 220. The way we finished was commendable. Our bowling was patchy. We have quality guys to do it in the team. We are six hitters and we try to hit as many as we can. The guys are improving and that is vital. We need to come up with better plans," Powell remarked.

Recapping the match, England chose to field first after winning the toss and dominated throughout. The West Indies faced challenges, with Brandon King and Kyle Mayers failing to make an impact.

Powell contributed 39 from 21 balls, but it was Pooran's standout innings that propelled the hosts to a total of 222/6.

In response, England's openers, Philip Salt (109 runs from 56 balls) and Jos Buttler (51 runs from 34 balls), set the tone for a successful run chase. Liam Livingstone (30 runs from 18 balls) and Harry Brook (31 runs from 7 balls) played crucial roles, and the Caribbean bowling attack struggled to defend the formidable target.

Adil Rashid and Sam Curran led the English bowling attack with two wickets each, while Moeen Ali and Reece Topley claimed one wicket each.

Looking ahead, the West Indies will aim to bounce back and devise better strategies in the upcoming 4th T20I scheduled for December 19 at Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad.
