A dirt bike rider has been seriously injured after he collided with a truck at Windale on Wednesday evening.

Emergency crews were called to the intersection of Lake Street and Swan Street just after 5pm following reports of a crash involving a truck and motorcycle.

Paramedics treated a 20-year-old man for leg, spinal and pelvic injuries at the scene before they took him to John Hunter Hospital in a serious condition, police said.

The truck driver, a 49-year-old man, was not injured.

It is understood the man, who was riding a dirt bike, came off his vehicle and landed under a small truck.

"Officers attached to Lake Macquarie Police District established a crime scene and have commenced inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the crash," police said in a statement.

They are calling for anyone with information or dashcam footage that could help their inquiry to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
