Dirk Kuyt makes Steven Gerrard admission and outlines Liverpool ambition

Former Liverpool forward Dirk Kuyt has revealed that he would love to one day be in the dugout alongside Steven Gerrard at Anfield.

Kuyt was a fan favourite during his time on Merseyside, scoring 71 goals in 285 appearances over the course of six years.

The Dutchman has now made the step into management, with his last job in charge of the Feyenoord youth team.

He is currently out of work, but is shortly due to complete his coaching badges after taking his UEFA pro-licence exams.

From there he will set his sights on senior management and has ambitions of being a boss in the future, but has admitted there would be an exception.

During Kuyt’s time at Anfield, he formed a strong partnership with Gerrard, and the pair have remained friends ever since.

Now with Gerrard excelling at Rangers, talk of him one day returning to Liverpool as manager has intensified.

Kuyt says that, while his goal is to be a manager, he would make an exception to be assistant to Gerrard should he get the job at Liverpool.

“I have a desire to be a manager soon and I am looking at options,” Kuyt told The Mirror.

“But there are exceptions for choosing a path as an assistant manager and being alongside Stevie would be one of them.

“If he wanted me to be his assistant, I’d like that a lot. In principle, I see myself going on to work as a head coach, but, like I say, there are always exceptions.

“The most beautiful moment I can see is when Steven gets the job and can call himself officially the manager of Liverpool.

“And he’d do a great job. As he’s done at Rangers, he will have a process, doing things gradually step by step.

“I hope to see him develop as a manager and see him work from close by for many years to come.

“That could be in the role of an opposition manager – but it could also be as a colleague.”
