Dion McGhee on Rangers 'radar' as Steven Gerrard eyes low risk deal for ex-Manchester United youngster

Rangers are one of a number of clubs chasing former Manchester United midfielder Dion McGhee - according to a report.

But the Ibrox side face English Premier League competition to sign the 19-year-old with West Ham and Watford both interested in keeping him in England.

The Old Trafford club did offer him a new contract so a development fee will be due - although Rangers will be able to snap him up for a much cheaper fee than English clubs.

The Daily Star state that crossing the border is attractive to McGhee to play under Steven Gerrard and he believes there's more chance of first team football in Scotland than if he remains in the Premier League.

He is also being targeted by teams across Europe though with Benfica and Porto linked while there’s also potential offers on the cards from France and Holland.

Ligue 1 side Nice and Dutch giants AZ Alkmaar are just two sides reportedly interested in his services.

McGhee joined Manchester United as an eight-year-old and played for the U23s last season before the season was cut short by COVID-19.

And after leaving the club he took to Twitter to say: “Since the age of 6, all I’ve known is @manchesterunited.

“I’ve gone through the youth ranks and learned a lot wishing the academy.

“I would like to stay a massive thank you to everyone at Manchester United Football Club, staff, players, coaches, managers & the fans who have helped and influenced me to become the player I am today.

“I’m excited at the new opportunities coming up and I’m ready for the next challenge. Thank you all! Once a red, always a red.”

Gerrard has already targeted the Premier League market having signed Calvin Bassey from Leicester. The Ibrox boss is also interested in another Foxes defender, in the shape of right back Dennis Gyamfi.
