Diogo Jota insists it is hard not to sit and think what might have been had he been able to avoid injury last season.
Liverpool completed the signing of Jota from Wolves in a £41m deal that could rise to £45m with add-ons last September.
The forward immediately hit the ground running for the Anfield club, netting nine goals in 17 games for his new side.
However, he suffered a knee injury playing in the Champions League dead rubber at Midtjylland on December 9 and didn’t return until March.
Jota then missed two more games before the season was out after picking up a foot injury during his side’s 4-2 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford.
And although Jota admits he was pleased to net 13 times for the Reds last season, the injuries he picked up do come to his mind when he reflects on his debut season for the club.
“It always obviously comes to your mind but I think it's not positive to start thinking [about] bad things,” he told Liverpoolfc.com.
“It happened, it's gone now. Obviously if you're going to say to me in the beginning 13 goals, maybe I would agree.
“But after that beginning maybe you expect some more. It's football and you never know what's going to happen next. Now it's a new season and a new start. I'm ready and the team will be ready for that as well.”
Jota is one of a number of forwards currently in Jurgen Klopp's squad, with trio Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino all having been instrumental in Liverpool’s recent success.
But he believes he holds an advantage over his teammates when it comes to team selection due to him being able to play in multiple positions across the forward line.
He said: “No, not really. I always answer this question [with] I like to be on the field, no matter which position.
“But, of course, I feel like being able to play in different roles gives you an extra advantage because managers can choose you for one thing or another.
“It's good for a player to have that ability – and that's one thing I'm looking to improve on as well.”
Liverpool finished 17 points off top spot last season and were knocked out of Europe by Real Madrid in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
And Jota admits his side's last campaign wasn't good enough and he is hoping they can mount what he believes to be a “proper fight for the title” this time around.
“We will give it a go, of course like always,” the Portugal international added. “Last season wasn't very good for us – we still finished third but it's not what we want. We want to go and give a proper fight for the title obviously.”
