Aussie Popyrin eliminated from the Open

Alexei Popyrin has bowed out in the second round of the Australian Open. (AAP)

Big-serving South African Lloyd Harris has got the better of Alexei Popyrin for a second straight major, ousting the local hope in the second round of the Australian Open.

Popyrin fought hard to claim the fourth-set tiebreak at Melbourne Park and take the match into a decider.

But it was Harris who finished the stronger, winning 6-2 1-6 6-3 6-7 (5-7) 6-3 to set up a third-round encounter with either No.22 seed Borna Coric from Croatia or American Mackenzie McDonald.

Popyrin, 21, had reached the last 32 at each of the past two Australian Opens, but he lost to Harris in the first round at last year's French Open.
