They said it was over. They (we) said it was done. However, last night, Margot Robbie and Dakota Johnson made it clear that naked dressing never goes out of style, as both actresses donned completely sheer looks for two separate events.
Robbie was in attendance at the London premiere for her new film, A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, in which she stars opposite Colin Farrell.
The 35-year-old Australian actress is best known for her red carpet “method dressing”, following a supremely pink press tour for Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie in 2023.

But Thursday evening wasn’t about the character at all: it was about good, old-fashioned glamour. Well, not that old-fashioned, for Robbie was entirely exposed in her Armani Privé gown, from the house’s 2025 Couture runway.
The backless dress featured glittering panels of beaded illustrations, brought together at the rear by a thong-esque string of beads, which met the straps to form a metallic flower between Robbie’s shoulder blades.

Her outfit was also a tribute to Giorgio Armani, the legendary Italian fashion designer who passed away last week. It’s far from Robbie’s first Armani moment: fans of the star’s Barbie looks will remember her in a custom pink Armani Privé look inspired by the 1977 Superstar Barbie doll, which she wore to the Golden Globe Awards.

Meanwhile, Dakota Johnson was across the pond, baring all at an entirely different event. The 35-year-old Materialists star was present for the Annual Kering Foundation’s Caring For Women Gala in New York, where she wore a sheer lace look by Gucci (when is it ever anyone else with Dakota?).

The look was made up of floral lacework, with full-length sleeves and a high neck. Johnson paired the dress with a rare up-do, a smoky eye, and diamond jewellery.
Earlier this year, it was widely regarded that naked dressing was officially “over”. This decision was unanimously reached following the introduction of a stricter dress code at Cannes Film Festival, which enforced a ban on any and all nudity. This was huge: some of Cannes most prominent fashion moments are the result of naked dressing (with props to Bella Hadid).

But not everywhere is Cannes, and there are still plenty of red carpets that will allow a little (or a lot of) skin to be shown. Plus, if Margot Robbie and Dakota Johnson declare it — simultaneously, no less — then there’s a very good chance they’re in the right.
