Diane Keaton‘s cause of death has been revealed after the actress sadly passed away over the weekend.
Keaton’s family issued a statement to PEOPLE magazine, revealing their loved one died of pneumonia on Saturday, October 11 (US time).
“The Keaton family are very grateful for the extraordinary messages of love and support they have received these past few days on behalf of their beloved Diane, who passed away from pneumonia on October 11,” the statement read.

The bereaved family also shared more details about the actress’ wonderful life, telling the mag, “She loved her animals and she was steadfast in her support of the unhoused community, so any donations in her memory to a local food bank or an animal shelter would be a wonderful and much appreciated tribute to her”.
A spokesperson for the actress confirmed over the weekend that she’d died at age 79, although no additional information was revealed at the time.
Her family — which includes daughter Dexter and son Duke — “asked for privacy” as they grieved the actress.
A friend of Keaton’s later told PEOPLE that her heath “declined very suddenly” in the months leading up to her death, adding that the actress had withdrawn from public life to spend time strictly with her “very closest family”.
It’s been reported that the actress left $5 million of her $100 million fortune to her dog Reggie, the golden retriever she adopted in 2020.

A source told Hollywood guru Rob Shuter, who writes on Substack: “Reggie was her world.
“Diane used to joke her great loves were her children, Al Pacino, architecture — and that dog”.
The insiders claim the $5 million set aside for Reggie would pay for him to be housed and taken care of, as well as supporting the charities Keaton has long donated to.
A separate source added: “She wanted Reggie to live with the same dignity and humour she did. It’s the most Diane thing ever — eccentric, kind, and deeply loving.”
Keaton was a renowned animal lover and often donated to animal rights charities, with some of said charities praising her generosity following her death.
