Diane Abbott readmitted to Labour Party – why was she suspended initially?

  • Diane Abbott has been readmitted to the Labour Party following an internal investigation, after being suspended for a year over comments about racism.
  • Upon her readmission, Ms Abbott received a formal warning for a separate tweet that referred to the Israel Defence Force as the 'Jewish Defence Force', for which she apologised.
  • Fellow Labour MP Joani Reid was also readmitted to the party on Thursday evening, having voluntarily suspended herself in March.
  • Ms Reid's suspension followed the arrest of her husband on suspicion of spying for China, though she clarified she was never part of a police investigation herself.
  • Both Ms Abbott and Ms Reid have had the Labour whip restored, allowing them to sit as Labour MPs once more.
