Di'Shon Bernard agrees Manchester United loan exit on deadline day

Manchester United defender Di'Shon Bernard is set to join League One side Portsmouth on loan today.

The 22-year-old has been keen to leave the club this month in order to gain playing time, and has agreed to move to Fratton Park until the end of the season.

The Manchester Evening News understands Bernard is set to undergo a medical with Portsmouth on Tuesday morning, with all parties confident a deal will be finalised in time for the 23:00 GMT deadline.

Bernard wants to play regular football between now and the end of the season, having reached a rather awkward crossroads in his career. The academy graduate impressed on loan with Salford and Hull previously, but he is low in the pecking order at United and past the point where playing in the youth set-up will aid his development.

It is understood that the centre-back's preference was to move to the Championship this month, but he is now happy to drop a level given the assurances of playing time at Portsmouth.

Bernard made his return from injury last month when he was named in United's training squad for their camp in Spain. The academy graduate played 45 minutes during the second-half of their clash against Cadiz.

He has not made a competitive first-team appearance for United since his debut against Astana in 2019. Bernard trained with the senior squad ahead of their League Cup win over Charlton this week, but did not make the match day squad.
