Devastated pals of alleged Scots murder victim raise more than £14k for family of 'gentle giant'

Devastated friends of alleged murder victim Liam Maloney have raised more than £14k in a fundraising drive to help support his grieving family.

Dad-of-three Liam was discovered with serious injuries on Niddrie's Marischal Road in the east of Edinburgh at around 8pm on Thursday May 5.

The 30-year-old was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary for treatment, but he passed away on Saturday.

Ryan McCabe, 48, appeared at the city’s sheriff court on Tuesday charged in connection with Liam’s murder.

Family friend Jodie Handren launched the GoFundMe page in a bid to raise £1000 but within hours the figure had rocketed to nearly £14.5k.

Jodie wrote: "Liam was an amazing, selfless man with a heart of gold, always the best laugh, and everyone’s biggest critic (every conversation started with an insult).

"Most importantly, he made time for everyone, especially his family and friends.

"We all have many memories from kicking about Niddrie, from the many conversations, parties or funny stories that will live on with us all.

"He was, without a doubt, The very best.

"This Go Fund Me is to help support the family and his three children left behind. It is also an opportunity for the people to show their support in honour of his memory.

"We all know he would be the first to give if it was anyone else.

"A larger-than-life character with a body to match. We all loved Liam, and this would be a great way to show our support in these difficult times.

"We appreciate any donation towards supporting the family and showing when times are tough, the people of our community come together to support one & other."

Other shocked friends previously paid tribute to Liam, described as a “gentle giant”, in the wake of his death.

Sean Eddington said: "Another one taken far too soon. Rip big man."

Adele Commons said: “Such a sad day for Niddrie today. Thinking about his boys and all the family who have already been through so much. RIP Liam x”

McCabe, of Edinburgh, made no plea and was committed for further examination and remanded in custody.

He is due to make his next appearance in court within eight days.
