Determined Border Collie back flips while wrestling with stick and shows it who’s boss

Some dogs love nothing more than finding a good stick while out on a walk - and the bigger the better.

But one border collie might have met his match when it came to taking the giant stick he’d found home.

One-year-old Pogo made a valiant attempt to drag the stick - which was twice his size - back to his owner using a range of unusual techniques.

In the background of the video was a viral TikTok audio dedicated to dogs who love a good tree branch, which sings: “Found a stick on the ground and now I’m gonna use it. All this power that I’ve found gonna totally abuse it.”

The weight of the stick twisted Pogo’s head around, leading him to try and pull the branch along, but he knew it wasn’t the most efficient method.

However, it was when he lived up to his ‘Pogo’ name and did a jump flip over the stick in a final effort to get it home that sent TikTok viewers into stitches.

His owner described the stick as ‘the centre of all importance’ for Pogo, hashtagging the clip #stickobbsession.

One commenter wrote: “How is his neck not broken with that flip?”

Another added: “You could say you were practicing your ‘gymna-sticks’ skills.”

A third even joked: “My neck hurt just watching that.”

But despite his unconventional stick harvesting methods, Pogo is an incredibly smart dog, and has learned 52 words in just one year.

In a series of videos, his owner demonstrates his intelligence by asking him to fetch his toys by name.

She lays out a selection of his toys on the floor in a random order and asks Pogo to ‘find Octopus’, and the dog hands her an orange octopus toy.

The clever collie continues to retrieve each toy, including ‘tugger’, ‘balloon’, ‘snake’, ‘tyre’ and ‘sausage’.

The American Kennel Club describes collies as a ‘remarkably bright workaholic’, as they are able to learn dozens of words, tricks and tasks.

One Border, named Chaser, became the world’s smartest dog, for her ability to remember more than 1,000 proper nouns - including 30 different balls by name and category.

The clever canine passed away in 2019, at the age of 15.
