‘Desecration’: Despair as White House dwarfed by under construction UFC ring on South Lawn

We’ve known for months that Donald Trump plans to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States (and also his 80th birthday) with a mixed-martial arts event on the front lawn of the White House.

The “UFC Freedom 250” will see six or seven bouts, including the lightweight and heavyweight championships, and as it’s now just weeks away, construction has begun on the White House’s South Lawn of a colossal arena for the 5,000 spectators. Incidentally, Trump had initially teased that 25,000 people would be attending, but this was considered alarmingly unfeasible.

Now photos of the construction have appeared online, and for many, it’s finally sunk in that the President of the United States really does plan to spend the nation’s birthday watching teeth fly across the Octagon in an arena that looks as if it’ll dwarf the White House itself:

Compared to other Trump administration ideas, this UFC bout is small potatoes. After all, nobody’s losing their job, nobody’s being discriminated against, and no constitutional rights are in danger. However, in a symbolic sense, this gaudy show is a major dent on the nation’s dignity and makes a mockery of the White House itself.

Any word on gas prices? Healthcare?

Or, as @JamieMetzl succinctly put it:

Others point out that this is almost literally Roman emperor-style bread and circuses, offering an impoverished people a gaudy and violent spectacle to watch as the cost of living climbs ever higher. Many compare this to the movie Idiocracy, though frankly, this might be a step too far even for President Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho.

Others point out that putting a giant stage on top of a lawn for weeks on end is going to kill it:

“Aside from how trashy this is, the event is 3 weeks out. Meaning the south lawn is going to be dead. Then the July 4 UFC event will follow. The south lawn will spend the remainder of the year looking like a white trash front yard. Actually, that’s pretty fitting.”

There is a fund in place to restore the lawn, but even so, this is going to be hugely destructive to the gardens around the White House.

But let’s be honest, a nation should try to represent itself symbolically at important anniversaries and show the world its true face. What could more accurately represent modern America than a series of furious and sweaty men punching each other in the face for a few hours?
