Derry Girls viewers in floods of tears after shock death in 'powerful' season finale

Derry Girls viewers went from fits of laughter to floods of tears after tonight’s season finale.

The devastating outcome left fans in bits and they’ll be hoping for some closure in tomorrow night’s bonus episode.

Tonight's final installment began with the crew finding out that Fatboy Slim would be bringing his world-renowned tour to Derry on Halloween night.

The girls and James were desperate to get their hands on five tickets, and so convinced Erin’s mum for early birthday money.

Irish actor Emmett J Scanlan also joined the cast for the finale as a super-fan who challenged James to a fistfight for the final five tickets after accusing the group of skipping him in the queue.

James ripped up the tickets in sheer panic which meant no one would be going to the show.

As the characters came to terms with their disappointment, Michelle managed to book a slot on local TV, during which she told a false sob story.

She claimed James was beaten and had his leg broken after an unsolicited attack outside the ticket office, after which the group was offered VIP tickets.

The night of the concert started with everyone in flying form, but a shock death at the end of the episode had the characters and viewers in floods of tears.

The closing scene showed the funeral procession, with Erin and Clare arm-in-arm.

After watching the show, hundreds of viewers took to Twitter to air their upset over the outcome of the final episode, and to praise the last three seasons of the show.

One person wrote: “Watching the truly terrific Derry Girls on @Channel4. A sheer comedic triumph, that's a razor-sharp mix of childhood nostalgia & outrageous laughs about loveable best friends that's more than a touch of John Hughes continues its 3rd & sadly final season.....”

Another said: “Derry girls literally had me sending squealing voice notes about that scene and then crying voice notes about the next.”

A third added: “Did anyone else see #DerryGirls tonight? That ending guys! Many manly tears have been shed by me tonight!

“I think I might have to delay watching the final episode tomorrow until the weekend as I'm not ready for it to be over just yet!

"What a super powerful episode that was.”
