Derry Girls fans 'not prepared' for ending of Channel 4 sitcom

The week of the Derry Girls finale has arrived and our time with the much-loved characters will shortly be coming to an end. The coming-of-age sitcom will see its series finale air on Tuesday night before a 'one year later' 60-minute bonus episode is broadcast on Wednesday.

Erin, Orla, Michelle, Clare and 'the wee English fella' James first shot onto our screens in 2018 but in 2021 the show's creator Lisa McGee confirmed the third instalment would be the "last adventure" for the gang. Over the years, the TV comedy set in 90s Northern Ireland has developed a global fandom and now many are gearing up to say goodbye to their favourite on-screen characters.

The finale is sure to be an emotional viewing for those who love the sitcom and many have been taking to Twitter to share how they're not ready for the show to end. Charlotte tweeted: "I don’t think I am or ever will be emotionally prepared for the finale episodes of #DerryGirls tonight & tomorrow" and Erica Van-Minnen added: "I don't think I'm prepared for the end of #DerryGirls".

Jonny posted: "Have to say I’m not mentally, physically or emotionally ready for the end of Derry Girls tonight. #DerryGirls" and Lisa B said: "I'm not ready for #DerryGirls to end tonight/tomorrow! It's too soon". Rebecca tweeted: "I’m not emotionally prepared to say goodbye to #DerryGirls tonight".

Eleni added: "getting ready to cry my way through tonight’s episode #DerryGirls" whilst Matthew tweeted: "I am not ready for #DerryGirls this week. @LisaMMcGee in advance, thank you and all the cast and crew for a wonderful 3 seasons!!". Lucy Ford added: "Absolutely not prepared that this week sees the final ever episodes of Derry Girls, what a show #DerryGirls".

Many fans were calling for a 70s spin-off last week after a special flashback episode aired showing a young Ma Mary and Aunt Sarah - so who knows what could be in store in the future. But Lisa said in her statement last year announcing the end of Derry Girls that "for now this is it for us".

The series finale of Derry Girls airs on Channel 4 and All 4 from 9pm on Tuesday, May 17, and the extra one hour episode will air on Wednesday, May 18, from 9pm.
