Derry Girls creator Lisa McGee issues statement on upcoming Series 3 and future of show

Derry Girls creator and writer Lisa McGee has issued a statement to fans across the world on the upcoming series of the popular Channel 4 show.

The show has become a smash hit across the world, and is highly revered by the people of Derry. Since it began in January 2018, Derry Girls managed to perfectly encapsulate the humour and heart of those from Derry.

The show has make its mark on the city, with Derry Girls themes walking tours, merchandise and of course, the now infamous Derry Girls mural.

Fans have been eagerly awaiting news of Series 3, and while many expected this series to be the last, creator Lisa McGee confirmed the news today.

In the statement, posted on Twitter, she told fans, "it was always the plan to say goodbye after three series."

Lisa McGee described the show as a "love letter" to Derry, where she grew up and went to school, and to the people there who helped to shape her.

She said: "It has been an honour to write it and I will be forever proud of everything it has achieved."

Derry Girls reflected much of Lisa McGee's experiences in growing up in Derry. The school that the characters attend is based on the all-girls convent school that Lisa went to, Thornhill College.

The use of Derry streets and landmarks during filming has brought the city to international attention, especially after the airing of the show on Netflix.

Lisa McGee firstly thanked the people of Derry and Northern Ireland for continued support, and to those at Hat Trick Productions and Channel 4 for making the creation of the programme a reality.

In a final sentence to fans, Lisa made it clear that even though Derry Girls will end after this upcoming series, their characters will continue to live on.

Lisa said: "Who knows if Erin, Clare, Orla, Michelle and James will return in some other guise someday, but for now this is it for us and we are excited to start filming this series with our incredible cast and crew to hopefully take our loyal fans on one last adventure."

Derry Girls Series 3 hopes to begin filming shortly.
