Derelict site turned into new play park in Newtownstewart

A former derelict site in the Co Tyrone village of Newtownstewart has been turned into a new play park for local children.

The £347,000 project at Mourne Park was officially opened this week and includes a number of accessible activities for those in wheelchairs.

The park came about as a result of the Village Renewal Project, which identified Newtownstewart as being a strategic focus for the Derry and Strabane Rural Partnership.

Noelle Donnell, chair of the local action group, said the new park will be a ‘fantastic asset’ for local children.

"The local action group are really pleased to have supported this project which is a fantastic asset for the village of Newtownstewart and for its residents, particularly the local children who will get great enjoyment out of this facility."

Amanda McConomy, community representative for the area, said those in the village were over the moon with the project.

"As a village we are truly over the moon with the fantastic play park which we have here in Newtownstewart.

“It is a central base for everyone and we are so grateful to all the partners who have helped delivered this."

Derry City and Strabane council mayor Graham Warke added: "It's a great honour and pleasure for me to officially open this new play park in Newtownstewart.

“I want to give credit to everyone involved in delivering this facility, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic.”
